Sing Free; Speak Free

By Sarah M. Prindle

Artwork by Susan Peters

Chirping birds
speak
in their own way.
The screech of a hawk
vulture’s cries
are painful to the ears.
The wren’s warble
a gentle cooing
are lovely songs.
These hopeful tunes
musical melodies
we love.
The vulture and hawk
the hunters
we fear.
Even unpleasant tunes
deserve
to be heard.
Birds are born to sing
we are born to speak
and can’t be silenced.
We have our own voices
even if no one wants to listen
we have a song to sing.
